Music In The 1980’s

Music+In+The+1980s

A new decade begins, and we are getting our groove on stepping into the 1980’s! With television becoming a reality in almost every home, MTV became a popular source for artists and fans. New artists started to become concerned with the images they displayed. The 1980’s was a turning point in the music industry- making electronic music, rap and hip hop more popular, in particular. Below is a list of some of the most famous artists from the 1980’s:

  • Bonnie Tyler- originally from the UK, Bonnie released a lot of great songs in the 80’s. Her songs include Total Eclipse of The Heart, Holding Out For A Hero (a very famous song, up to this day. In fact, it was in Shrek 2), and It’s A Heartache. Her husky voice (which means her voice is low and rather rough) was a big trademark in her career.
  • Bon Jovi- Bon Jovi is an American rock band that was originally formed in our neighboring state, New Jersey! The band was formed after Jon, the lead singer, was recognized with his song Runaway. Some of their songs include You Give Love A Bad Name, Livin’ On A Prayer and It’s My Life (released in 2000).
  • Madonna- Madonna is very well known, and for a reason. She has the most top ten songs on the Billboard chart with a record of 38 songs. Some of the songs Madonna recorded were Like A Prayer, La Isla Bonita, and Papa Don’t Preach.
  • Billy Joel- originally born in Bronx and raised in Long Island, Joel is not only a singer but also a pianist and song writer. His song Goodnight Saigon was about the war in Vietnam. He isn’t the only one to write a song about the war, as I discussed in the previous article. In fact there is a musical about the war as well called Miss Saigon, which I had the honor to watch and call it my favorite musical.
  • Foreigner- is a British-American band that was formed here in NYC. One of their most famous songs is I Want To Know What Love Is. It’s great to see that the band is still ongoing with their tours for over 20 years.
  • Whitney Houston- Whitney Houston is a name which most people know and or have heard of. Houston was Guiness certified for being the most awarded woman of all times. Some of her songs include I Wanna Dance With Somebody, I Will Always Love You, So Emotional and many more.
  • Cher- Cher is an American singer and actress that hit the charts in the 1960’s with a song she and her husband performed I Got You Babe. She’s got a sharp and deep voice. In the 1980’s she began her acting career and released several songs that became a huge success. One of her well-known song from the 1980s is If I Could Turn Back Time. Cher became significant to the music industry when she released the song Believe in the 90’s. It was significant because it was the first hit pop song to use an Auto-Tune processor. Some other songs of her include Strong Enough, Shoop Shoop Song, and Love Hurts.
