On September 12, 2025, Sushila Karki was officially elected as Prime Minister for Nepal. Not only is she the first female Prime Minister that serves for Nepal, she is also the first government official to ever be elected through a social media app, Discord. You might be wondering, what caused an entire country to elect their Prime Minister on a social media platform? To understand why, we first must see what happened on September 4, 2025.
On September 4, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli banned 26 social media platforms due to the platforms not complying with their registration rules that goes with the local law which sets boundaries for people on social media. This ban would’ve greatly impacted the citizens of Nepal because there was data that shows 55% of people that live in Nepal use social media on a daily basis. On September 6, the citizens reacted by using VPN (Virtual Private Network), protesting on Instagram by stating how the country is corrupted and showing their anger on the prohibition of social platforms.
The community started their protest on September 8, located in Kathmandu, Nepal. The protester had 160,000 members. The police forces were armed with live rounds and tear gas which was used to suppress the protesters and protesters, whom were throwing back tear gas at the officers while holding up an UNO reverse card to reference the UNO reverse card meme. Before 24 hours, the morning of September 9th, Oli had officially resigned from his position as the Prime Minister of Nepal. This caused the government to collapse, protestors were committing arson burning buildings down causing huge property damage. Nepal’s military intervening to restore order, and withdraw the ban of social media.
On September 10, Hami Nepal (Youth group) opened a Discord server called, “Youth Against Corruption,” and they voted through a poll system. On September 12, President Ram Chandra Poudel officially declared that Sushila Karki was the new Prime Minister. The rest is app history!
