“They are coming for your children,” conservative media cried. No less than three months ago the San Francisco Gay Men’s Choir posted a music video on youtube titled, “we”re coming for your children.” When the video was released, it received waves of backlash from conservative media and private citizens. After this backlash, the choir came out with a statement that the video and song was satire and wasn’t meant to be taken literally. Basically, it was intended to poke fun at homophobic people.

The reasons for the backlash were the so-called problematic lyrics, that emulated a cult-like appearance of the choir. These lyrics included Your children will care about,” the chorus adds, “fairness and justice for others. Your children will work to convert all their sisters and brothers. Then soon we’re almost certain, your kids will start converting you! Now this sounds to conservatives pretty bad, but remember this is all a joke. It’s meant to say that we will help kids be inclusive and maybe their parents will follow suit.

The aftermath resulted in all the choir members being accused of being child molesters on social media. The homophobic people took the bate, claiming that the members of the choir were on the San Francisco pedophile registry. This turned out to be untrue, as internet proved once again that people need real sources before they jump on their soap box. This comment made on Twitter, the toxic cesspool of the internet, responded to the backlash: Commentator Raheem Kassam twitter: “NO WE AREN’T INTERESTED IN KIDS YOU BIGOT WE JUST WANNA GET MARRIED LIKE YOU.’” He proceeded to tweet “LGBT in 2021,” directing followers to an article about the song.

After all this backlash, and political fighting, the video was eventually taken down- to the dismay of the choir. There are two realities to this situation. One- naming songs about coming for people’s child, bad idea. Two- homophobic America has a limited sense of humor.
