The Iranian protests began on December 28, 2025, and continued throughout January of 2026. The demonstrations started because people were having problems with their finances. It eventually developed into a significant anti-government movement that Iran hasn’t been seen in a long time.
How the Protests Started
Shop owners in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar shut their businesses and protested because inflation rates and currency depreciation created financial problems. The Iranian rial reached its lowest value in history which forced most people to spend much more money than before to buy basic goods. This first protest marked the beginning of the demonstrations, which rapidly grew into other areas. People participated in strikes, marches, and street protests throughout the entire country which included the cities of Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad, and Kermanshah. The movement grew beyond business owners to incorporate workers and students.
What Protesters Want
Initially, economic concerns were the main focus:
- Ending runaway inflation
- Stabilizing the currency
- Making daily life more affordable
The rising protests led to higher standards which people needed to achieve their goals. Nowadays, an increasing number of protesters call for political reforms that go beyond eliminating corruption in the government and pursuing significant modifications to the country’s governance. The protests showed people demanding both leadership changes and anti-government demonstrations.
The exiled son of Iran’s last monarch Reza Pahlavi, and other opposition leaders worldwide, demanded reforms while they urged protesters to maintain order.
Government Response and Wider Impact
The Iranian government has implemented its strictest enforcement measures because of ongoing protests which have led to mass detentions and brutal treatment of demonstrators. According to officials, thousands of individuals have been arrested due to their participation in the demonstrations. Authorities began their statewide telephone and internet service shutdown during early January to stop demonstrators from organizing and sharing information. The outage has created major interruptions to both economic activities and everyday life.
The crackdown has faced opposition from human rights organizations and multiple countries because of reports which state that several people died during security operations at different locations.
Who Is Involved
The protest movement gains its well-known character through the participation of demonstrators from different social backgrounds. The Iranian minority organizes smaller protests to make their social reform demands known to the world.
The situation in Iran is definitely causing anxiety throughout the region, as American presence is increasing in the areas around Iran due to the Iran government’s suppression of protestors. President Trump has not ruled out American military action at this point.
