November 4, 2025, Zohran Mamdani was elected as mayor for NYC (New York City) becoming the first South Asian and Muslim mayor in the history of New York City. However, many citizens and politicians such as Donald Trump were displeased with the result of the election, and some people have shown hints of fear and concern about the future of the city. Some citizens and politicians took actions posting hate towards Muslims through online tweets and sending hate speeches toward the Muslim community, with criticism and misinformation about Mamdani.
After Mamdani was officially announced as the victor of the mayor election for NYC, many voters who are Muslims, were satisfied with the outcome. However, they also felt fear after witnessing attacks on Mamdani and his religion, thinking any Muslims out in public will face the same assault. Donald Trump has attacked Mamdani in different ways; calling him a “communist mayor,” threatening to have him arrested after his announcement of showing interference with federal immigration, and calling him incompetent. These tweets have caused people to feel intimated by Mamdani’s potential future policies and support the idea of Trump blocking any aspects of Mamdani’s agenda. Trump also positioned Mamdani as a “resistance leader.” However, after meeting Mamdani, Trump was made public statement about their ability to work well together.
Many people also fear Mamdani by hearing his policies, worried about the outcome and its effects. For instance, Mamdani promised to intervene with ICE, preventing them from entering NYC. This sparked citizens being worried about an increase in clashes and violence with federal authority and New Yorkers. Mamdani also stated that if he were elected, he would make bus transportation free. This caused citizens to be divided and formed different opinions, such as supporting the idea because it would increase bus efficiency or possibly hold a negative impact on the economy. Many others also believed that handling buses efficiently can be dealt with in different ways, by improving the quality. These policies generated more hate towards Mamdani causing people to spread information that he is a mayor trying to ignore the needs of all New Yorkers.
It is still very early in his mayoral term, so he needs time to answer his critics regarding policies. However, the disturbing news of anti-Muslim rhetoric he is facing needs to end. It has no place in politics.
