Video Games In School!

Featuring FDR’s New Esports Club
Video+Games+In+School%21

With our lives being dominated by our phones and electronics, games contribute as an escape from reality. Games, as problematic as they are, allow one to be able to have fun, connect with others, decompress, work with others, and to explore unique opportunities. Due to these factors, our school has decided to create the Esports Club!

The presence of video games in schools is not necessarily the most astounding or surprising thing. Many other schools in the New York City area have esport teams and clubs that have been participating against one another for a few years. Our school is creating a similar experience with the introduction of the Esport Club at FDR High School.

General Information Regarding the Club

The club is advised by Mr. Catalano, the Assistant Principal of the Mathematics Department, and managed by Allen. The club meets every Thursday in room 256 during 9th period. At the moment the room has a setup that is composed of gaming computers, Xboxes, and Nintendo Switches. The club currently runs games such as Valorant and Overwatch, but are subject to change with recommendations from students. As long as you’re in decent academic standing, you are able to join the club. If you are interested in joining you can go to room 256 when the club meets.

FDR’s Esport Club Future
The Esport Club is looking forward to expanding and competing against other schools. In the previous year, our school ran a smaller scale of the Esports Club with a lot fewer people, and competed against other schools such as Midwood and New Utrecht High School, on Valorant. This year, our school is looking to do the same, competing against other schools in New York City. Other prospects include joining the EZ esports league, expanding the size of the club, and including a bigger variety of games that the club offers.

I firmly believe that you too should become a part of the Esports Club as well! The atmosphere surrounding the room, when the meeting is in session, is amazing; a bunch of passionate people coming together to celebrate and enjoy games that they are each extremely fond of. Join the club to create new experiences, meet new people, develop skills, but more importantly, TO HAVE FUN!
