If you walk the halls of FDR, you have definitely seen the amazing murals on every floor of FDR. Well magic did not just put them there! Two of our Cougar family members played a big role on making it happen, Ms. Williams, our AP of Science, and Gina Intindola, one of Ms. Repole’s secretaries. The New Dealer was very lucky to get the opportunity to speak to each of them about these incredible murals.
Ms. Williams Interview:
How do you feel hallway murals benefit the FDR community?
Hallway murals help the school environment by promoting a sense of pride and belonging. It also shares themes of identity commonly held by both students and staff. They visually celebrate our diverse community, highlight academic disciplines or subject areas, and remind that FDR High School is a place where content, culture, and creativity are honored.
Our murals also increase student engagement by making our hallways more welcoming, inspiring curiosity, and encouraging students to take ownership of their school space. In addition, they promote school spirit and help communicate our values diversity, equity, empowerment and persistence to everyone who enters our doors.
How were students involved in the mural process for the Science Department?
Students played an active role in shaping the Science Department murals. We invited student submissions through their art classes. Three designs were submitted, and one design was selected for our mural on the 4th floor. Participating students were Alexa Tlatelpa (Design, Class or 2024), Yukiko Izumi (Contributing Artist), and Kristy McCarthy (Art Direction). In addition, Daniel Britton-George (Design, Class of 2025), Yukiko Izumi (Contributing Artist), and Kristy McCarthy (Art Direction) created the 3rd-floor mural after Daniel was inspired while listening to science teachers discuss various happenings and themes from his science classes. His design reflects the ideas and content he heard shared in the science office.

Gina Intindola Interview:
How did you become involved in the mural making process for FDR?
When I was working with AP Williams in the Science Department, she mentioned she wanted to get a mural on the 3rd and 4th floors. I did some research and came across Thrive. We communicated for a few weeks and together finalized our plan. One of the students came up with a design which was emailed to the artist. The artist then created a mockup and collaborated with AP Williams to create a final design. The final design was emailed to Principal Katz for approval.
Do You have a favorite Mural?
Yes, my favorite mural is the one across from room 123, Spread Love, it’s the Brooklyn Way. I just loved the entire concept and when I was in the office, it was nice to see. This mural was Repole’s vision, from when she was the AP of Climate and Culture.

These murals really improve our Cougar environment. They not only inspire students and staff, they make our school more of a second home for all the members of our Cougar Nation!
