Would you take time out of your day to sit back with a book of your choice and read? On average, less than 50% of teens today read for pleasure! Though this is not a terrible number, it can definitely be higher. There are many reasons why teens today lack the desire to read, from the corruption of social media to the simple fact that not many people know how to find books of their interest. But, what if I told you that you can actually use social media to help you find your perfect book?

Personally, I haven’t always been a reader myself. I’d dreaded reading time in school, and I had to force myself to get through a book. But, this all changed when I came across a video on TikTok. One day while I was scrolling through the app, a video popped up that caught my attention. The video was of a woman telling a life changing situation going on in her life. She told her story with full emotion, expression and detail. It was just the story that would have me interested from start to end. Towards the ending of the story she came to the major plot twist, only she didn’t finish the story. Instead she held up a book and said, “to find out what happens next read ______” Immediately after, I knew I had to read the book. Long story short, it was one of the greatest books I’ve ever read!

If you are struggling to find books of your interest, my suggestion to you is next time when you are using your favorite social media app, whether it be TikTok, YouTube, or even Instagram, try searching up somethings that you are interested in followed by the word book. You’ll be able to browse and see different book recommendations on the topic, till you see one that catches your eye. Reading is an important life skill to have that comes with many benefits. Not only does it improve your vocabulary, and other things academic wise, it also helps with other things such as mental health and communication skills. I believe people should read to gain the advantages that come with it, and be able to do so while actually enjoying it! So, use your apps….to read!!!
