Earth day is a marvelous holiday that is celebrated in the U.S. on April 22nd. We celebrate this holiday to appreciate the Earth and its natural resources. Earth Day began in 1970, when air pollution, and many environmental issues were too common. Our government had grown oblivious to these situations. The oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969 became a massive turning point for the U.S., and it also caught the attention of Wisconsin’s U.S. Senator, Gaylord Nelson, who then advocated for teach-ins (about our environment) at colleges.  Gaylord Nelson, then persuaded Pete McCosky, a former Congressman, to help him encourage this idea. In the end, both of them chose the date April 22nd, which was in-between spring break and final exams. Thanks to this, many Americans were inspired and began to recognize and celebrate the protection of our environment on Earth Day.

Celebrating Earth Day is a fun experience! Planting a tree in your local neighborhood or park can be one great way to celebrate Earth Day. You can also spend your time outside and take in a moment with nature. New York City has many options! You can attend the Earth Day Festival in Union Square, on April 16, 2023, or go to Rockefeller Park in battery Park City, for a zero-waste art project with traditional Japanese drumming. Another popular place that celebrates Earth Day is at the New York Botanical Garden; it spends its weekend on themed festivities and offers a parade, screenings, tours, and musical performances. Earth day is an amazing holiday! It showcases our Earth for what it truly is, beautiful!   And, definitely worth saving!!!!
